Orange/Red Springtails (Yuukianura aphoruroides):

Truly colorful springtails! Their intense color contrasts beautifully with dark substrate. Fun fact: This species doesn't jump! It moves slowly, making it easy prey.

Gray Springtails:

Their bodies are covered in scales that shimmer with a metallic sheen. They are more resistant to temporary dry spells, making them an ideal choice for terrariums with varied humidity.

Globular Springtails (e.g., Allacma fusca):

Unlike most springtails, these inhabit the upper spheres of the terrarium and are decidedly more charming than the standard, elongated species.

Facts and Myths about Springtails – Time for Fun Facts!

Springtails are living fossils that walked the Earth long before the dinosaurs – the oldest known fossils are about 410 million years old! They survived four of the five great mass extinctions, which attests to their incredible adaptive abilities.

• Myth: They'll escape and infest my apartment!
  FALSE. Most springtails need very high humidity to live. In the dry air of an apartment, they die almost instantly from dehydration.
• Myth: They bite people and animals!
  FALSE. Their mouthparts are adapted exclusively for eating dead organic matter and fungi. They are completely harmless.
• Fact: They have a built-in catapult!
  Their name comes from the jumping fork (furca) – a special appendage under the abdomen. When threatened, the fork strikes the ground, launching the springtail into the air in as little as 18 milliseconds!
• Fact: They are masters of survival!
  The species Hypogastrura nivicola, known as the "snow flea," lives on snow thanks to a natural "antifreeze" in its blood. Another species, Plutomurus ortobalaganensis, is the deepest-living terrestrial animal, discovered almost 2 km underground!
