Description

Allacma fusca – Large and Visible Globular Springtails for Terrariums

If you're tired of clean-up crews that disappear into the substrate forever after being introduced into the enclosure, you've come to the right place. With these springtails, your terrarium will be teeming with life not only on the level of reptiles and amphibians but also with fascinating and perfectly visible microfauna. Introducing Allacma fusca – a true rarity and a treat for every bioactive terrarium enthusiast. These are some of the largest and most beautiful European springtails that will completely change your perception of a clean-up crew.

Why is Allacma fusca a unique species?

Unlike most of the small springtails available on the market, Allacma fusca are large (up to 4 mm), shiny, and above all, globular creatures with a deep, chocolate color. Their greatest asset, however, is their behavior. As an epigeic (surface-dwelling) species, they spend practically their entire lives on the surface of the substrate, leaves, and roots. Watching these small, shiny pearls patrol the terrarium in search of food is an extremely interesting experience. They are not just an efficient clean-up crew, but also a living and moving decoration for your bioactive enclosure.

Origin and Condition of Offered Specimens

The specimens we sell were wild-caught at the end of May 2025. The animals are already post-quarantine, are doing great, and are fully healthy and active. Most importantly, they are breeding like crazy for us! You receive animals from us in excellent condition and accustomed to captive conditions, which guarantees an easy start for your own breeding culture.

Keeping Allacma fusca at Home – We're Busting Myths!

On the internet, you can find opinions that these springtails are "impossible to breed." Nothing could be further from the truth! Maintaining a stable culture of these rare springtails is very simple, provided a few key conditions are met. Based on our successful experiences, to achieve success, you must provide:

  1. A Suitable Container: The breeding culture should be kept in a container with a capacity of at least 5 liters. More space ensures a more stable humidity gradient and air circulation, as well as more living space for these active creatures.
  2. Excellent Ventilation: This is an absolute must! As a surface-dwelling species, Allacma fusca requires constant access to fresh air. The container must have a large ventilation panel (e.g., at least 10x10 cm). A dense mesh, paper towel, or breathable fabric can be successfully used to cover it.
  3. Moist Substrate and DRY Litter: This is the key to success. At the bottom of the container, there should be a layer of constantly moist soil or peat (approx. 2-5 cm) with clumps of wet moss. However, all the decor above – pieces of bark, dry oak or beech leaves, twigs, and rotten wood – must remain dry. The springtails will go down to the moist layer to hydrate and will forage and live on the dry surface.
  4. A Proven Diet: Most importantly, our culture successfully reproduces and thrives based exclusively on our specialized springtail food, available in our store. It guarantees all the necessary nutrients. The food is best served mixed with water (as a thick paste) in the upper, dry layers of the terrarium, e.g., on a piece of bark.

Order Allacma fusca and see for yourself how fascinating and visible a clean-up crew in your terrarium can be!
