Description
Description:
Camponotus vagus is rarely found in Poland, mainly in the eastern parts, but it occurs throughout most of Eurasia and also in northern Africa. Its wide distribution range indicates its adaptability. They are mainly found in pine and mixed forests, in more sun-exposed areas. They nest, like most Camponotus species, in various types of wood and under stones, sometimes in the soil among tree roots. Compared to other Camponotus species, they are quite aggressive and predatory. Their activity is increased during the night. They are skilled hunters and cultivate aphids. They form medium-sized, monogynous colonies, with around 10,000 workers. Their soldiers make a striking impression - huge, pitch-black ants.
