Description
Description:
These ants are very large, with queens measuring 14-17 mm and workers ranging from 3-14 mm, making them some of the largest ants in Europe. They are black-brown with red legs, slightly shiny, and slender. The soldiers resemble small tanks and make an impressive sight when marching in columns.
In nature, they nest in forests, in decaying wood, primarily in dead coniferous trees, occasionally also in living trees. The soldier caste actively hunts invertebrates, and the ants create battle trails consisting of hundreds of soldiers and individual foragers. Young colonies develop rather slowly but gain momentum over time, reaching even up to 10,000 workers. They cultivate aphids.
