Description

In our opinion, talc is the best barrier for most ant keepers. It has several major advantages and one drawback. At AntsInvasion, we exclusively use talcum powder.

Advantages:

  • NO ant will pass through it until it is trampled out - there is no way.
  • It is clearly visible where it has been worn away and where it is still intact. There are no surprises like "it suddenly stopped working and the ants escaped."
  • It is very quick and easy to apply (see the video demonstration below).
  • It is incredibly cost-effective compared to other barriers - a single test tube lasts for hundreds of applications on 20x20 cm (7.87x7.87 in) outworlds.
  • You can also create 'talcohol' from it (a mixture of talc and isopropyl alcohol).
  • Most ant species tread it out very slowly - for example, a Ghost Ant colony with several thousand workers wears away only a few millimeters per month, so a 15-second application protects your outworld for up to a year ahead.
  • You can safely refresh it while the ants are active in the outworld (something impossible with other popular liquid barriers).
  • No need to wash or clean the outworld before reapplying.

Drawbacks:

  • Take care not to leave loose talc dust on the outworld floor, as loose powder can harm the ants.
  • Large, massive colonies wear it down faster - for instance, a Pheidole colony of ~5,000 workers may require refreshing roughly once a week.
