Description:
Camponotus cruentatus is an easy-to-keep, beautifully colored, and very large ant species with a soldier caste. The workers of this species are comparable in size to Camponotus ligniperda, the largest ants in Europe. Considering their genus, cruentatus exhibits relatively fast development, and under favorable conditions, a colony can reach over a hundred workers in a year.
In their natural habitat, colonies can reach around 10,000 workers. The workers display a high degree of variation in size, shape, color, and the tasks they perform within the nest. The major workers are beautifully colored, resembling ligniperda, but instead of red, they have a brown coloration on their abdomens. These ants are fast and aggressive. They capture their prey with their large mandibles and spray it with acid, then carry it back to their nests and dismember it.
