Description

Tetramorium simillimum – an exotic and dynamically developing Tetramorium ant

Tetramorium simillimum is an extremely interesting tropical and subtropical ant species whose range also extends into the temperate zone. They can even be found in cooler regions such as England or Denmark, where they successfully inhabit greenhouses and palm houses. Interestingly, they also occur in Australia as an introduced species, but one that is harmless to local ecosystems.

Appearance and comparison with Tetramorium bicarinatum

At first glance, Tetramorium simillimum may seem similar to the popular T.bicarinatum, but in reality, it is noticeably smaller and lighter in color. These ants readily nest under tree bark, stones, or in other natural crevices. Although they can dig tunnels, they usually choose ready-made places for their nests.

Colony characteristics and development

  • Rapid development: T.simillimum forms huge, practically "infinite" colonies.
  • Inbreeding (inbred nuptial flights): Nuptial flights take place inside the nest, which allows for constant population growth.
  • Aggressiveness and courage: Despite its small size, the species is very aggressive, though quite slow and weak when hunting larger prey.
  • Immortal colonies?: Due to exceptionally rapid reproduction and inbreeding, colonies can last for a very long time, sometimes giving the impression of being "immortal."

Keeping conditions

  • Temperature range: At least room temperature, but for optimal breeding results, heating is recommended (heat mat or cable).
  • Humidity: T.simillimum is a moisture-loving species. Overly dry nests, e.g., wooden ones, should be avoided. Acrylic, cork, 3D, or soil nests work great.
  • Feeding: These ants are practically omnivorous – they can extract protein even from the chitinous exoskeletons of insects left in the outworld. They readily accept feeder insects and other sources of protein and sugars.

Why keep Tetramorium simillimum?

  • Very simple and pleasant keeping: Due to its wide environmental tolerance and minimal requirements, T.simillimum is suitable for keepers at various levels of experience.
  • Rapid development: If you dream of observing intensive colony growth and high activity, this species will meet your expectations.
  • Alternative to T.bicarinatum: Less popular, yet equally interesting and resilient, with many traits typical of the Tetramorium genus (aggression, environmental flexibility).

Tetramorium simillimum is an excellent proposition for anyone looking for exotic ants that are easy to keep and yet form huge, dynamically developing colonies. Their rapid growth, inbreeding, and omnivorous nature ensure fascinating observations in a home formicarium.
