Description
Plagiolepis pygmaea - A Fascinating Ant Species
Wide Range and Adaptability
Plagiolepis pygmaea is a very interesting species inhabiting vast areas from southern Europe through northern Africa to parts of Asia. It can adapt to virtually any habitat, from cities and other human-impacted areas to wild terrains. There have been instances of this species being found at altitudes above 2000 meters. Alongside Pheidole pallidula, it is one of the most ubiquitous and pioneering species in southern Europe.
Reproduction Strategies and Nuptial Flights
These ants can likely inbreed but also perform traditional nuptial flights, after which they return to the nest and join the egg-laying queens. Interestingly, due to the powerful pheromone that blocks the development of larvae into queens in this species, young queens can only emerge in nest areas far from the existing queens. A resting period is also necessary for nuptial flights since royal larvae are fed only by overwintered workers.
Food Storage
One of the intriguing features of this species is its food storage method similar to the famous honey ants. Plagiolepis have something akin to a "barrel" worker caste, which can greatly enlarge their abdomens to store vast amounts of food.
Breeding
Regarding breeding, these ants are excellent for both experienced ant keepers and beginners. Plagiolepis thrive in most nests, are undemanding in terms of diet, very resilient to beginner mistakes and forgetfulness, while being great for observation and very original exotics.
