Messor, they say it's monogynous, claustral and boring, right? Well, not really! It turns out that Messor structor can create a super colony. There's one in Austria. The Messors from this colony reproduce like pharaoh ants - they practice inbreeding, and the number of queens increases throughout the year. Unfortunately, the queens from this offer are just regular ones and don't do anything like that. But they're also large and cool. Monogynous colonies can reach up to 50,000 workers.

This species plays a very important role in seed dispersal for many plants and serves as a host for the myrmecophilous cricket Myrmecophilus cyprius.
