Messor capitatus
Messor capitatus is one of the most impressive harvester ant species in our store. They combine beginner-friendly traits - a calm temperament and low maintenance requirements - with breathtaking worker polymorphism. Highly adapted to Mediterranean climates, they have mastered the art of gathering and processing seeds into "ant bread".
Unlike Messor barbarus with its reddish major heads, Messor capitatus boasts a magnificent, uniformly glossy black coloration. Massive major workers reach up to 16 mm with powerful mandibles designed to crush hard seeds.
