Description

Messor clivorum is a species of medium-sized ants that are very easy to keep. They are closely related to Messor structor.

They measure about 0.4-0.5 inches (10-12 mm) in size.

Like most ants in this genus, they exhibit clear caste differentiation, with the smallest workers measuring about 4 mm (0.16 inches) and the largest ones being twice as long.

Messor ants feed on seeds instead of honey, which is both an interesting and rare phenomenon among ants, and a significant advantage in terms of husbandry. Major workers crush seeds with their large mandibles.
