Description

Erromyrma latinodis (formerly Monomorium latinode) – an exotic species with inbreeding

Erromyrma latinodis are relatively large, red-colored ants, formerly classified as Monomorium latinode. They are found in tropical regions of the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Madagascar. In terms of size, they match the highly desired M. latastei, and their build and way of reacting to threats (raising the gaster upwards) are reminiscent of the famous fire ants (S. invicta).

Key features

  • Inbreeding: Nuptial flights occur inside the nest, which allows for unlimited colony development and a long "life" of the superorganism.
  • Behavior: Although they develop relatively quickly, they are not as efficient as smaller species. In a threatening situation, they adopt a characteristic "combat" posture.
  • Keeping conditions: A resilient and uncomplicated species to maintain. It likes higher temperatures – supplementary heating significantly speeds up development.
  • Food: Ants readily accept honey, sugar water, as well as insects (a source of protein).
  • Nest: Thanks to their high environmental plasticity, they can be kept in most types of formicariums; it is only better to avoid extremely dry conditions.

Erromyrma latinodis is a rarely found in trade, original ant species with an exotic appearance, which will appeal to enthusiasts of inbreeding and those looking for unconventional species to keep. Thanks to their resilience and adaptability, they thrive in various conditions, providing many attractions during observation.
