Description
Description:
According to many breeders, they are considered one of the most beautiful ant species in Poland!
It is a common species found in Europe and North America, but due to their subterranean lifestyle, many people have never even seen a wild worker ant. These ants prefer partially sunny forest edges or meadows and are often found in gardens. They build mounds or hide under sidewalk slabs or stones. They cultivate aphids and feed on their honeydew. In their nests, one can find Platyarthrus hoffmannseggii crustaceans that act as debris eaters.
Interestingly, the queens of this species do not resemble the workers in terms of their structure or color. Many sources state that if there are multiple queens in a colony, the excess queens are removed over time, . However, I know of colonies that are several years old and have several thousand workers, and the queens still cooperate. In nature, the size of the colonies can reach several thousand individuals.
