Description
Lasius neglectus, also known as Invasive garden ant, inhabit Anatolia, a region in Asia Minor that includes Turkey, Uzbekistan, and other surrounding areas. Lasius neglectus gained fame as the only known species to successfully establish itself in Poland. In their native range, these ants have standard nuptial flights and form large, polygynous colonies that compete with each other. However, in new areas, their behavior has changed. The ants began inbreeding and abandoned intra-species competition in favor of forming powerful supercolonies with thousands of queens, vast numbers of workers, and occupying enormous areas.
This species has significant advantages over native species. For example, a study on the efficiency of aphid farming by L. neglectus compared to the native L. grandis showed that Invasive garden ants could manage a much larger number of aphids and obtain twice as much honeydew (over 2kg from a single tree!). Their superior organization and ability to rapidly recruit large numbers of workers to food sources give them an edge, even over the common black ant (L. niger).
Despite being a dangerous invasive species, Invasive garden ants tolerate the presence of other ant species. Increased aggression has only been observed in interactions with L. grandis, L. emarginatus, and L. cinereus, likely due to the significant size difference between these species' workers and those of L. neglectus, as well as their occupation of the same ecological niches. However, it has been proven that species such as Lasius fuliginosus and Liometopum microcephalum can defend their territories and successfully compete with neglectus.
Like most invasive species, they thrive in urbanized areas, often nesting in buildings, between pavement slabs, and in gardens where plants for aphid farming are abundant, which forms the basis of their diet. In captivity, like most invasive species, they are very easy to care for, accepting virtually any nest, any type of food, and a wide range of temperature conditions.
