Description

Colobopsis leonardi - Fascinating Arboreal Ants from Southeast Asia

Species Description

Colobopsis leonardi is a remarkable species of arboreal ants found in Southeast Asia, including Thailand. Despite their unassuming appearance and lack of bright colors, they are incredibly interesting to observe. This dendrophilous species forms large, dominant colonies in tree bark and in hollowed-out branches or limbs.

Behavior and Diet

Colobopsis leonardi feeds on small insects that are dragged into the nest by individual workers without close cooperation. They also readily consume aphid honeydew and plant sap collected in tree canopies. They belong to the Colobopsis cylindrica species group, known for possessing caustic internal secretions used in colony defense. When critically threatened, minor workers perform autothysis, rupturing their bodies to expel sticky, caustic fluids that neutralize opponents. Furthermore, soldiers of this species display the hallmark adaptation of plug-headed (cork-headed) ants: an extraordinarily flattened, cylindrical head used for phragmosis, sealing the entrance holes of the nest like a living door to completely bar intruders.

Care Requirements

Colobopsis leonardi is a fascinating species that poses no major challenges in captivity. These ants readily consume most foods offered to them, including sweet carbohydrates (honey and sugar water) and protein sources such as feeder insects. Due to their arboreal lifestyle, the best nesting materials are wood or cork nests.

Thermal Conditions

Colobopsis leonardi thrives in warmth, so providing supplementary heating to around 24-28°C (75-82°F) greatly benefits their brood development.

Summary

Colobopsis leonardi is a unique arboreal ant species from Southeast Asia. Their remarkable dual defensive mechanisms – featuring phragmotic soldiers using their plug heads to block nest entrances, and suicidal workers defending the colony through autothysis – make them one of the most intriguing ants to keep. Providing them with proper arboreal conditions, including a suitable wood or cork nest and adequate warmth, ensures a thriving and fascinating colony.
