Description

Contrary to what beginners might think, one of the most important factors affecting the breeding rate and health of isopods – especially demanding species from the genus Cubaris – is the right substrate. It is important not only to provide them with the right nutrients but also to replace the substrate every few months in larger breeding setups. Our specialized substrate dedicated to Cubaris consists of a rich blend of carefully selected ingredients:

1. Very fertile, genuine bio-humus from earthworms (worm castings). Soil that has passed through the digestive system of an earthworm is 50% richer in organic matter than regular soil. Their castings provide the most valuable micro and macroelements for isopods, forming the rich base of the mixture.

2. Chopped oak leaves. The leaves are soaked for at least 2 weeks, then chopped and added to the mixture. Soaking makes them more suitable for consumption, and by avoiding heat treatment, they retain their micro and macroelements as well as fungal spores necessary for proper decomposition.

3. Pieces of decaying oak wood. The decomposing wood is subjected to heat treatment, as it would be difficult to clean by soaking alone. The pieces are finely fragmented to ensure a balanced rate of decomposition, providing essential cellulose and lignin.

4. Soaked peat. Excellent for retaining moisture and providing the right soil structure and aeration, helping maintain the optimal microclimate.

5. Bat guano. A rich natural organic fertilizer dissolved in hot water before mixing, ensuring an even distribution of valuable nutrients throughout the substrate that Cubaris isopods love.

6. Granulated lime pellets. A readily available source of calcium essential for exoskeleton development, shell hardening, and healthy molting.
