Description
Contrary to what beginners might think, one of the most important factors determining the health, vitality, and breeding success of millipedes is a properly formulated substrate. Millipedes spend most of their lives in it – burrowing, molting, laying eggs, and above all, continuously feeding on it. Our specialized millipede substrate consists of a rich blend of carefully selected ingredients:
1. Very fertile, genuine bio-humus from earthworms (worm castings). Soil passed through the earthworm digestive system is exceptionally rich in organic matter, micro-, and macroelements, creating a nutrient-dense base.
2. Chopped oak leaves. The leaves are soaked for at least 2 weeks, then chopped and mixed in. Soaking makes them soft, palatable, and readily consumed, forming the primary dietary staple for millipedes.
3. Pieces of decaying oak wood. The wood rot undergoes careful heat treatment and balanced fragmentation, ensuring optimal decomposition while supplying vital cellulose and lignin.
4. Soaked peat. Provides excellent moisture retention, optimal soil aeration, and fluffy texture, allowing millipedes to burrow easily and molt safely.
5. Calcium carbonate. A readily available source of calcium essential for the proper development, hardening, and mineralization of the millipede exoskeleton.
