Pheidole speculifera - Fascinating Ant Species from Africa

Pheidole speculifera is an African ant species characterized by its large size and beautiful coloration. They inhabit Kenya, Cameroon, and Ethiopia. Queens of this species have a burgundy body with a black abdomen, while workers are yellow-orange. Major workers, which are also burgundy, add an interesting element to the colony.

Characteristics

Pheidole speculifera are very voracious and develop quickly. They exhibit high activity, with even young colonies being very dynamic, comparable to larger colonies of other popular species like Pheidole pallidula.

Breeding Conditions

The breeding of Pheidole speculifera is not significantly different from other species of the Pheidole genus. These ants adapt well to various conditions, are not picky eaters, and readily consume any protein-based food. Carbohydrates should also be present in their diet, although they are not consumed as eagerly as proteins.

Nesting Preferences

Pheidole speculifera prefer soil nests but are not overly picky about nesting locations. Like most exotic ants, they enjoy warming their brood near heat sources, so providing adequate thermal conditions is advisable.
