Description
Arboreal species, which means they're tree-dwelling ants. They build nests in trees by connecting leaves with silk produced by larvae, earning them the name weaver ants. An adult colony can take over an entire tree, constructing dozens of nests that function as a unified entity. These ants are utilized in agriculture as a form of biological pest control. They defend vegetation (mainly citrus trees, coconut palms, cocoa trees, cashew trees, and mango trees) against insects, while also reducing insects’ visits to flowers. This reduction in pest activity has led to a 50% decrease in pesticide usage in 1988, without compromising crop quality or yield.
They are highly aggressive and often compete with nearby ant species for resources. The larvae of this species are also used as food and spice in some countries due to their high protein content and vitamin composition. Queen ants of this species are even used to prepare soup. Colonies can reach several hundred thousand workers.
