Description
Monomorium chinense
These very small ants are remarkably resilient to adverse conditions such as stress, desiccation, or prolonged lack of food. They are among the smallest ants available for cultivation and are characterized by incredible growth in worker and queen numbers within the colony. In the wild, chinense live on the edges of forests and meadows, nesting in the soil near plant roots. Like most species of Monomorium, they reproduce using an unusual method - new queens and males appear in the nest throughout the year, and queens, after shedding their wings, start laying eggs. At first glance, these ants are similar to floricola, especially the workers. The queens are more robust. Colonies of this species almost always have a tremendous amount of offspring in the nest. A 16 cm test tube, after half a year in average conditions, should be overflowing with offspring. There are so many eggs and larvae that they behave like a liquid. Of course, such a quantity of offspring requires a huge amount of protein for such small ants. A colony housed in a 16 cm test tube can consume several adult cockroaches.
Caution! These ants are known as escape artists, making them challenging to keep for beginners. Unlike floricola, they do not seem to be super aggressive towards nearby creatures in case of escape, nor do they seem to easily settle in houses, as they always disappear after a week.
