Description
Grammostola pulchripes – The Gentle Giant of Terrarium Keeping
Grammostola pulchripes is one of the most desired and respected species in the terrarium hobby. Its reputation is built on three pillars: impressive size, a legendarily calm disposition, and striking beauty. Growing to the size of a dinner plate (leg span up to 20 cm), it is a true giant whose presence in a terrarium inspires awe and makes it an ideal choice for both beginners and experienced keepers.
Why is Grammostola pulchripes an Exceptional Choice?
- A True Giant: It is one of the largest and most massive tarantulas available in the hobby, making a huge impression with its size.
- Gold and Velvety Black: The striking beauty of adults – a deep black body adorned with characteristic golden-yellow stripes on the "knees," creating an elegant and exotic look.
- Legendary Calmness ("Pet Rock"): It is widely recognized as one of the calmest tarantula species. Slow, majestic, rarely showing aggression, which makes it an ideal and safe choice to start with.
- Display Species: Unlike many reclusive tarantulas, adult G. pulchripes often spend time in the open, allowing their beauty to be fully admired.
- Exceptional Hardiness: Evolution in the harsh climate of the Gran Chaco (Argentina, Paraguay) has endowed it with remarkable resilience. It is a "forgiving" species and does perfectly well at room temperature.
- A Companion for Decades: This is an investment in passion. Females are extremely long-lived, living 20-25 years.
Temperament and Safety – What You Need to Know
Understanding the behavior of G. pulchripes is key to stress-free care. Its reputation as one of the calmest tarantulas is fully deserved.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. The effects of a potential bite, which occurs extremely rarely, are comparable to a bee sting.
- Urticating Hairs: This is the main defense mechanism. However, the spider flicks them very reluctantly, only in situations of severe and prolonged stress. The risk of contact with them is much lower than with many other New World species.
- Defense Hierarchy: The spider always chooses calmness. Its first reaction is to slowly move away. Flicking hairs is secondary, and biting is the absolute last resort.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – A Horizontal Fortress
For a terrestrial species, the key rule is: the terrarium should be significantly wider than it is tall to minimize the risk of a fatal fall. For an adult specimen, the ideal dimensions are 30x30x25 cm. Good ventilation is essential.
The most important element is the substrate depth. A layer of coconut fiber or peat at least 10-15 cm deep should be provided (ideally, fill the terrarium halfway). This allows the spider to dig (especially juveniles), which reduces stress, and also drastically shortens the potential fall distance.
Temperature and Humidity – Simplicity and Stability
- Temperature: The optimal range is 20-28°C. Standard room temperature will suffice in most homes. Heating mats under the bottom of the terrarium should be avoided!
- Humidity: This species prefers rather dry conditions (60-70%). The best method is to keep the substrate dry and provide constant access to a water dish. Periodically moistening one corner of the terrarium is fully sufficient. Avoid misting the entire interior.
Curiosity: Distinguish from G. pulchra!
Do not confuse Grammostola pulchripes with Grammostola pulchra (Brazilian Black)! Although the names sound similar, they are two different species with different requirements (G. pulchra needs higher humidity). Make sure you are buying the right spider!
