Description
Chilobrachys fimbriatus (Indian Violet) – Jewel of the Western Ghats
This is not a tarantula that flaunts bright colors to please everyone. Its true beauty and value to the connoisseur lie in the dynamic process of creation, in observing how a complex, underground kingdom emerges from the chaos of the substrate. Purchasing a Chilobrachys fimbriatus is not so much acquiring an animal as it is investing in a living, evolving terrarium project. Observing the spider dig, move substrate, and envelop everything in a dense web provides a satisfaction that no static species can offer. This is a choice for the patient observer who understands and respects the fiery nature of Old World tarantulas.
Why is Chilobrachys fimbriatus a Connoisseur's Choice?
- Unmatched Aesthetics: A true jewel. Its striking coloration includes iridescent purple-blue legs, a copper-hued abdomen with black "tiger" stripes, and a contrasting beige carapace.
- Web Architect: It is a prolific and architectural builder. It actively transforms its environment, creating extensive silk tunnels leading from a deep burrow.
- Old World Temperament: Extremely fast and highly defensive. It does not possess urticating hairs, and when threatened, it can produce audible sounds (stridulation) as a warning before attacking.
- Ethical Origin: This species is threatened in the wild by collection for the pet trade. Our specimens come exclusively from captive breeding, allowing you to support the conservation of wild populations.
- Exclusively for the Advanced: Owning this species is a testament to the highest level of experience and responsibility in terrarium keeping. Its potent, medically significant venom requires absolute respect.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Providing the proper conditions for this species is crucial for its well-being and the keeper's safety.
Terrarium – Underground Fortress
For an adult specimen, an enclosure of approx. 30x30x30 cm is recommended. The most important parameter, however, is the substrate depth. A layer of a coconut fiber and peat mix at an absolute minimum of 15-20 cm thick must be provided. This allows the spider to dig a burrow, which is fundamental to its sense of security and reduces defensive behaviors.
Temperature and Humidity – The Gradient Technique
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-29°C.
- Humidity: Should be maintained at 60-80%. Instead of misting the entire terrarium, one corner of the substrate should be kept slightly moist, e.g., by occasionally overflowing the water dish. This creates a "humidity gradient," allowing the spider to self-regulate its needs.
- Ventilation: The terrarium must have efficient gravity ventilation to prevent mold growth.
Feeding
This is a predator with an excellent appetite. The diet should consist of appropriately sized feeder insects (crickets, cockroaches). Juveniles are fed 2-3 times a week, adults every 1-3 weeks. A good practice is to observe the abdomen – it should be neither narrower nor significantly wider than the carapace.
Venom and Safety – Essential Knowledge for the Keeper
Information regarding the venom of Chilobrachys fimbriatus must be treated with the utmost seriousness. This is a species with potent venom of potential medical significance. A bite is very painful and can cause localized swelling and muscle cramps. For this reason:
- Handling this species is categorically discouraged.
- All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers, with utmost caution.
