Description
Acanthoscurria geniculata (Giant Whiteknee Tarantula) – An Icon of Terrarium Keeping
Acanthoscurria geniculata is a species that transcends the scope of an ordinary terrarium animal, becoming a true icon in the global hobby. Known as the Giant Whiteknee Tarantula, it is one of the most recognizable and sought-after spiders in the world. Its popularity is based on a unique combination of traits: impressive size, striking beauty, legendary appetite, and very rapid growth rate. It is this dynamism and visual gratification that cement its position as one of the best tarantulas on the market.
Why is Acanthoscurria geniculata an Exceptional Choice?
- A True Giant: It is one of the largest tarantulas regularly available for sale. Adult females reach an impressive leg span of 20-22 cm, and their massive build enhances the impression of size.
- High-Contrast Beauty: The velvety black body provides a perfect backdrop for the bright white stripes on the legs and the dense, red hairs on the abdomen. Importantly, juveniles acquire adult colors very early on, making them attractive at every stage of life.
- Rapid Growth: Unlike many slow-growing species, A. geniculata reaches impressive sizes in just 2-3 years. The keeper quickly sees the results of their care.
- Legendary Appetite: It is known for its explosive, extremely spectacular reaction to food. Feeding it is a true spectacle that provides a lot of excitement.
- Resilience and Hardiness: As a species originating from the Amazon rainforest, it is very resistant to minor husbandry errors, making it an excellent choice for the "confident beginner."
Temperament and Safety – What You Need to Know
The temperament of A. geniculata is complex. It can best be described as bold, confident, and defensive. When confronted with a threat, it more often holds its ground and faces the intruder rather than fleeing. This is not a species for every novice.
- Urticating Hairs: This is the primary and readily used defense mechanism. This species does not hesitate to flick a cloud of highly irritating hairs from its abdomen. They can cause intense itching and rash. Wearing gloves is recommended during any work inside the terrarium.
- Venom and Bite: The venom is considered weak and medically insignificant. The real danger is mechanical – an adult specimen has massive fangs over 2 cm long, and their bite is very painful and can cause a deep wound. However, biting occurs only as a last resort.
- "No Touch" Rule: Due to its defensive nature, potent urticating hairs, and the risk of a painful bite, handling this spider is absolutely discouraged.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – A Horizontal Fortress
For a terrestrial species, the key rule is: the terrarium should be significantly wider than it is tall to minimize the risk of a fatal fall. For an adult specimen, the ideal dimensions are 45x45x30 cm. Good ventilation is essential.
The most important element is the depth of the substrate. A layer of coconut fiber or peat at least 10 cm thick should be provided (ideally filling the terrarium halfway). This allows the spider to dig, which reduces stress, and also drastically shortens the potential fall distance.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Amazon
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C. Standard room temperature will suffice in most homes.
- Humidity: Should be 70-80%. The best method is to keep the substrate moist (especially in the lower layers) and provide constant access to a water dish. This allows for the creation of a humidity gradient, mimicking conditions in a natural burrow.
