Description
Amazonius burgessi (Ghost Tree Spider) – The Ghost of the Amazon
In the heart of the Amazon jungle lives a creature so fast and elusive that it has earned the name "Ghost Tree Spider." Amazonius burgessi is a species that has taken the hearts of terrarium keepers by storm in recent years, offering a unique combination of stunning beauty, dynamic temperament, and fascinating scientific history. Its almost teleportation-like speed and mesmerizing color change make it a gem in any collection and a satisfying challenge for the conscious hobbyist.
Why is Amazonius burgessi an Exceptional Choice?
- Unparalleled Metamorphosis: Observing the transformation from a brightly, contrastingly colored sling (yellow legs, black abdomen) to an elegant, metallically shimmering adult (dark navy blue with hints of green and burgundy) is one of the most satisfying experiences in terrarium keeping.
- "Old World Soul": This is a New World tarantula that possesses traits of Old World species. It lacks urticating hairs, and its defense strategy is stunning speed and, as a last resort, a bite. This makes it an ideal "bridge species" for learning to work with fast spiders.
- Active and Visible Inhabitant: It is an extremely agile and active spider that readily builds intricate web nests, making it a fantastic species for observation.
- Contemporary Hobby Legend: Owning A. burgessi means owning a living fragment of the most recent history of arachnology. This species was formally described only in 2018 (as Pseudoclamoris burgessi), and in 2022 it was moved to the new genus Amazonius.
Temperament and Safety – Understanding the "Ghost"
Correct interpretation of this species' temperament is crucial. It is not aggressive in the sense that it doesn't seek confrontation, but it is highly defensive.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. The effects of a potential bite, which rarely occurs, are comparable to a bee sting.
- Speed: It is one of the fastest tarantulas in the hobby. Its first and almost only reaction to a threat is a lightning-fast escape to its hide.
- "No Touch" Rule: Due to its extreme speed and jumpiness, this is a species intended solely for observation. Handling it is strongly discouraged to avoid unnecessary stress and the risk of a fall, which can be fatal for the spider.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Vertical Terrarium
As an arboreal species, A. burgessi strictly requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the recommended dimensions are 20x20x30 cm. Choosing a terrarium with excellent cross-ventilation is crucial to prevent air stagnation.
Temperature and Humidity
- Temperature: The optimal, stable range is 24-28°C. It does well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: Should be 70-80%. It is best maintained by periodically misting one of the terrarium walls and keeping a corner of the substrate moist, allowing it to dry out between mistings. Juveniles are particularly sensitive to drying out.
Substrate and Decor
A layer of 3-5 cm of substrate (e.g., coconut fiber) is sufficient. It is essential to provide the spider with vertical structures for climbing and nest building, such as a cork tube or pieces of bark.
