Description
Description:
A large, aggressive ant that engages in fierce battles with Manica rubida due to similar preferences in habitat. It is found in almost all of Europe. They occur in mountains, forests, cities, riverbanks, and lakeshores. They form monogynous or polygynous colonies, and in the latter case, they can create a polydomous system where neighboring colonies closely cooperate and occupy a vast area.
Fun fact: The workers of this species carry each other during relocations. One curls up into a ball, and the other grabs and carries it. This behavior is likely aimed at saving energy.
Due to their relatively fast development and aggressiveness, these ants are perfect for beginners who want to see their ants quickly engage in combat with live prey. Their pupae are useful in adopting Formica sanguinea.
