Nocturnal Empire of the Giants
In its native habitat, Dinomyrmex gigas operates as a highly polydomous colony. Mature colonies can comprise up to 7,000 workers distributed across multiple satellite nests. These ants are nocturnal to evade predators and parasitic phorid flies, making them intensely photophobic. Despite their immense size, they are often called "gentle giants" as they lack a sting, defending themselves with formidable mandibles and formic acid sprays.
Care and Founding Requirements
Founding is notoriously delicate: from founding to the first nanitic worker takes 2.5 to 3 months. Any vibrations or light disturbances can trigger oophagy (egg-eating). Keep founding queens in complete darkness, provide high ambient air humidity but strictly dry substrate, and maintain temperatures at a stable 24-25°C (75-77°F).
