Description
Description:
Both queens and workers of this species are bicolored. This species develops rapidly and can reach a population size of up to around 20,000 workers. The workers have heart-shaped abdomens and raise them high if they feel threatened.
The species is considered highly dominant. The workers quickly and efficiently recruit their sisters if they sense danger. They create scent trails. They are not aggressive towards gentle ants, but they show significant aggression towards ants such as Myrmica rubra or soldiers of Pheidole pallidula. In most cases, they completely take over areas where they find high-protein prey. They have stingers, but they mainly use them to deter other ants by placing drops of venom on their bodies. They mainly hunt live arthropods and tend to aphids. Larger colonies can also be fed with fruits.
This species is well-suited for vivariums due to their preference for nesting in tree bark.
