Description
Crematogaster castanea - Unique Ants from Africa
Note: This species is somewhat poorly described and may turn out to be a twin species of C. castanea. It will soon be identified by a myrmecologist.
Species Description
Crematogaster castanea is a fascinating species of ant from Africa. They are known for their characteristic nests, which resemble cocoons and are placed in tree crowns. The material used to build these nests is similar to cardboard and is a mixture of wood, saliva, and possibly fungus.
Behavior and Defense
Like other Crematogaster species, such as the popular Crematogaster scutellaris, Crematogaster castanea can lift their abdomen over their head when threatened to deter attackers. Their distinctive stingers, which resemble more a spoon than a needle, excrete a drop of venom with an intense, unpleasant odor. This venom causes a strong reaction in enemies, forcing them into desperate attempts to rid themselves of the secretion. Thanks to this effective chemical weapon, Crematogaster castanea can even win skirmishes with African army ants (Doryllus sp.).
Development and Colony Size
Crematogaster castanea develop quickly, and their colonies reach considerable sizes. In the wild, their diet is primarily based on the honeydew of aphids, which they farm and protect by building cardboard structures around their feeding areas. They also hunt small insects and scavenge carrion.
Diet and Feeding
In captivity, Crematogaster castanea are not picky eaters. They readily accept sweet liquids such as honey and sugar water. Protein food such as fruit flies, cockroaches, and crickets works well for them.
Housing Conditions
Raising Crematogaster castanea is easy and very rewarding for ant keepers. These ants do not require special heating, although they do appreciate the opportunity to warm their brood on a heating cable or mat.
Summary
Crematogaster castanea is an exceptional species of ants from Africa, ideal for entomology enthusiasts. Their unique behaviors, rapid development, and low maintenance requirements make them an excellent choice for both novice and experienced keepers. Provide them with the right conditions and diet, and you will enjoy observing these extraordinary insects.
