Description

Previously known as Pheidologeton diversus, this species is known for its remarkable polymorphism compared to other ant species, with the largest majors being up to 550 times heavier than the smallest workers. They are highly voracious and feed on insects, supplementing their diet with plant proteins such as seeds, nuts, and fruits. These ants create long and dense foraging trails. Thanks to their enormous colonies consisting of hundreds of thousands of workers, these foraging activities can last for several days, earning them the name "Marauder ants." During foraging, smaller workers can often be seen riding on the backs of majors to conserve energy while traveling along the trail. They possess a sting that contains paralyzing venom. Majors can bite humans strongly enough to cause tissue damage. They are aggressive and fiercely defend their territory. There have been documented cases of these ants overpowering snakes measuring over one meter in length.
