Description

This extremely charming species, originating from Asia (China, Laos, India), is distinguished by a significant size difference between the queen, which can reach up to 2.5 cm (0.98”), and the workers, which measure only 2-5 mm (0.08-0.20”). Another advantage of this species is its beautiful coloration, with the queen being amber-red and the workers yellow-orange. Their colonies can reach impressive sizes, from several dozen to even 500,000 workers. These ants are typically subterranean, very secretive, and timid. In nature, they create extensive networks of very wide chambers underground, housing their massive colonies. This species develops very quickly, so under good conditions, they can achieve a large population in a short time. Another interesting feature is their very specific diet, which mainly consists of termites.

Regarding the maintenance of this species in captivity, it requires a bit more skill and understanding of their habits. Due to their subterranean lifestyle, the best type of nest for these ants is definitely an earthen nest. Their specific diet in domestic conditions can be based, for example, on cricket or cockroach nymphs and other small, soft food. Sweet liquids such as honey or diluted sugar can also be provided.
