Description
Psalmopoeus ecclesiasticus – Critically Endangered Jewel
Psalmopoeus ecclesiasticus is a species for the true connoisseur – a spider with fascinating biology and an extraordinary metamorphosis. Originating from the humid rainforests of Ecuador and Colombia, this arboreal tarantula offers one of the most spectacular sights in terrarium keeping: the transformation from a brightly colored blue-and-orange sling into an elegant, olive-gold adult. It is a species with a fast growth rate and a dynamic temperament, posing a satisfying challenge for the conscious keeper.
Most importantly, this is a species Critically Endangered in its natural habitat due to deforestation. Captive breeding plays a crucial role in preserving its genetic line. By choosing a specimen from our legal breeding program, you become a custodian of this precious heritage.
Why is Psalmopoeus ecclesiasticus an Exceptional Choice?
- Extraordinary Metamorphosis: Observing the transformation from a spectacular blue-and-orange sling to a subtly elegant, olive-gold adult is a unique experience.
- "Old World" Temperament: As a representative of the Psalmopoeus genus, it does not possess urticating hairs. Its defense strategy relies on lightning-fast speed and, as a last resort, a bite.
- Ideal "Transitional" Species: Its moderately potent venom (compared to Asian species) and extreme speed make it an excellent species for learning to work with fast arboreal spiders.
- Active Builder: It webs willingly and extensively, creating intricate nests in vertical hides, which is fascinating to observe.
Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge
The character of P. ecclesiasticus is complex: it is not aggressive, but extremely skittish, nervous, defensive, and lightning-fast. It is a species intended for intermediate keepers.
- Venom: Considered moderate and medically significant. It is not life-threatening to a healthy person, but it is more potent than typical New World tarantulas. A bite is very painful and can cause symptoms such as intense pain, swelling, and muscle cramps.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast spider. Its first reaction to a threat is flight. Only when cornered will it unhesitatingly assume a threat posture and attack.
- No Urticating Hairs: This tarantula does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is its bite.
- Handling: Due to its extreme speed and venom potency, handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter (12-inch) tweezers.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Vertical Terrarium
As an arboreal species, P. ecclesiasticus strictly requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the recommended minimum dimensions are 20x20x30 cm. Excellent cross-ventilation is crucial to prevent air stagnation and mold growth in the humid environment.
An essential decor element is a vertical cork bark tube, which will mimic a natural tree hollow and serve as the main hide.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Rainforest
- Temperature: The optimal range is 25-28°C (77-82°F). It does well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: High, at 70-85%. It should be maintained by providing a water dish and regularly moistening part of the substrate (e.g., once a week).
