Description
Cyriopagopus sp. 'hati hati' – The Jewel of Sulawesi
In the world of tarantula keeping, few species combine such mesmerizing beauty and a clear warning as Cyriopagopus sp. 'hati hati'. Known as the "Purple Earth Tiger" or "Sulawesi Violet Tarantula," this spider is a living work of art. Its iridescent, violet-blue legs contrasting with a light carapace create an unforgettable sight. However, its most telling name comes from the Indonesian language: "Hati Hati" – "be careful." This is the fundamental principle of caring for this demanding Old World gem.
For years, this species was known in the hobby as Cyriopagopus sp. 'hati hati'. Although recent research (December 2024) has moved it to the new genus Phormingochilus, the name Cyriopagopus is still commonly used in the trade and among keepers, which is why we use it here.
Why is Cyriopagopus sp. 'hati hati' a Connoisseur's Choice?
- Unmatched Beauty: Hypnotic, metallic violet-blue legs and abdomen, contrasting with a cream-colored carapace. The coloration shimmers depending on the lighting.
- Fascinating Lifestyle: Although adult specimens lead a typically arboreal lifestyle, building extensive web nests, juveniles show strong fossorial tendencies, digging burrows. Observing this change in behavior as they mature is extremely rewarding.
- Old World Temperament: As the quintessence of Asian tarantulas, it is skittish, lightning-fast, and highly defensive. It poses a satisfying challenge for the most experienced keeper.
- Support for Species Conservation: Its only known habitat on Sulawesi is severely threatened. By choosing a specimen from our captive breeding program (CB - Captive Bred), you actively contribute to the conservation of this species and reduce pressure on wild populations.
Temperament and Safety – The "Hati Hati" Principle
This must be emphasized strongly: Cyriopagopus sp. 'hati hati' is a species intended exclusively for advanced experts. Its character demands the highest level of respect and caution.
- Venom: Potent and medically significant. A bite causes severe pain and can induce systemic symptoms (muscle cramps, dizziness). There are no reports of fatalities in healthy adults, but the effects are serious.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast spider ("lightning-fast," can "teleport"). It does not possess urticating hairs. Its only line of defense is flight or, when cornered, a swift and repeated attack.
- "No Touch" Rule: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers, in a secure environment, with utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium for the Specialist
The key is to understand its two-stage lifestyle. The terrarium must be vertically oriented (e.g., 30x30x45 cm for an adult) and possess excellent cross-ventilation.
A thick layer of substrate (8-10 cm) that retains moisture (coconut fiber, peat) is essential to allow young specimens to dig. Equally important is a vertical decor element (cork tube, bamboo), which will serve as the main hide for the adult spider.
Temperature and Humidity – Balance is Key to Success
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C.
- Humidity: High, at 70-80%. However, the balance between humidity and ventilation is most important. Its mountain origin suggests a need for good air circulation. The terrarium must have excellent cross-ventilation to prevent stagnation and mold growth. The substrate should be kept slightly moist, and a water dish provided.
