Description

Nhandu tripepii – Star of the Terrarium Hobby

Nhandu tripepii is a species that has achieved iconic status in the world of terrarium keeping, and for good reason. This impressive tarantula from South America is described as a true "monster" among Brazilian tarantulas, and at the same time as a charming "ball of blond fluff." Its popularity stems from a unique combination of traits: impressive size, dense, "shaggy" hairiness in shades from strawberry blond to copper, and an active, bold character. Unlike many reclusive species, N. tripepii often spends time in the open, making it one of the best display tarantulas.

Why is Nhandu tripepii an Exceptional Choice?

  • Phenomenal Coloration: Dense, long hair in shades of "strawberry blond," honey-orange, and copper, which contrasts beautifully with the darker body. A true jewel for any collection.
  • Impressive Size: Grows to a considerable size (18-20 cm leg span), making it a true giant in the terrarium.
  • Active and Visible: This is a bold spider that often stays out of its hide, actively patrolling its territory or "rearranging" the terrarium. An excellent species for observation.
  • Fast Growth and Appetite: It grows relatively quickly (medium-fast) and is known for its voracious appetite, which makes keeping it extremely satisfying.
  • Exceptional Hardiness: This is a very resilient species that forgives minor husbandry errors. It adapts well to conditions and tolerates fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

Temperament and Safety – Understanding the Bold Defender

The temperament of N. tripepii is complex: bold, active, yet defensive. It is not aggressive in the sense of attacking without reason, but when disturbed, it will defend its territory.

  • Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. The effects of a potential bite, which occurs rarely, are comparable to a bee sting.
  • Urticating Hairs: This is the main and very readily used defense mechanism. This species does not hesitate to flick a cloud of highly irritating hairs (Type I and III) from its abdomen. They can cause intense itching and rash. Wearing gloves and long sleeves is recommended during all work in the terrarium.
  • Defense Hierarchy: The spider usually chooses to flick hairs. A threat posture and biting are a last resort.
  • Handling: Due to its very irritating hairs and defensive nature, handling this species is categorically discouraged.

Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide

Terrarium – A Horizontal Space for a Giant

For a terrestrial species, the key rule is: the terrarium should be significantly wider than it is tall. For an adult specimen, the ideal dimensions are 30x30x25 cm or 40x30x30 cm. Good gravity ventilation is essential.

The most important element is the substrate depth. A layer of coconut fiber or peat at least 10 cm deep should be provided. This allows the spider to dig (especially juveniles) and provides a sense of security.

Temperature and Humidity – Simulating a Transitional Environment

  • Temperature: The optimal range is 25-28°C. It does well at standard room temperature.
  • Humidity: Should be 70-80%. The best method is to keep one half of the substrate moist (e.g., by overflowing the water dish), while leaving the other half dry. This creates a humidity gradient.
