Description

Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens (GBB) – Jewel of the Terrarium Hobby

Introducing Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, also known as the GBB (Greenbottle Blue). It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and desirable spiders in terrarium keeping, an ideal choice for both beginners and experienced keepers. Its incredible metallic coloration, lively temperament, active lifestyle, and impressive web constructions make it an excellent display tarantula that rarely hides from its keeper's sight.

Why is the GBB an Ideal Spider?

  • Incredible Coloration: A spectacular transformation of colors – from a black-and-orange sling to an adult with metallic blue legs, a greenish carapace, and a fiery orange abdomen.
  • Intense Webbing: This species is a true artist. In a short time, it can turn the terrarium into a dense, multi-level network of web tunnels and platforms.
  • Activity and Visibility: Unlike many reclusive tarantulas, the GBB willingly stays in view, making it a fantastic spider for observation.
  • Fast Growth and Voracity: Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens grows very quickly and rarely refuses a meal, which brings great satisfaction from keeping it.
  • Ideal for Beginners: Simple keeping requirements and high resilience to mistakes make it a recommended species for those starting their tarantula adventure, who are not deterred by the spider's greater speed.

Detailed Species Description

Spectacular Color Metamorphosis

One of the most fascinating features of this spider is its transformation during development:

  • L1-L4 Stage: Young spiders have a golden carapace, beige legs with black stripes, and a brightly colored, orange-and-black abdomen.
  • Juvenile Specimens: The magic begins after they exceed approx. 2 cm in body length (around the L5-L6 molt). A metallic blue sheen appears on the legs, which becomes more intense with each subsequent molt.
  • Adult Specimens: An adult is a true work of art: metallic blue legs, a blue-green carapace, and an intense orange abdomen.

Adult females reach up to 7 cm in body length and about 15-16 cm in leg span. Males are slightly smaller (approx. 5 cm body length) and more slender.

Origin and Natural Environment

Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens is an endemic species from the dry, desert scrublands of the Paraguaná Peninsula in Venezuela. In the wild, it builds densely webbed burrows at the base of cacti and shrubs. Understanding its natural, dry environment is the key to success in keeping it.

Keeping Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens – A Complete Guide

Terrarium for GBB

  • Type: Terrestrial. Although the spider readily uses height to build its web, a terrarium that is too tall poses a risk of a fatal fall.
  • Dimensions: Slings (L1-L4) require small containers. For an adult, a 30x30x25 cm terrarium or a 30x30x30 cm cube is recommended.
  • Decor: It is crucial to provide plenty of anchor points for the webbing. Numerous branches, roots, cork tubes, or artificial plants will turn the terrarium into a three-dimensional canvas for the spider.

Temperature and Humidity – The "Keep Dry" Principle

This is the most important element of keeping GBB. This species does not tolerate excessive moisture and poor ventilation.

  • Temperature: Optimal is 25-28°C during the day, with a slight drop at night. The spider also does perfectly well at room temperature.
  • Humidity: Keep humidity at 50-65%. The substrate (e.g., coconut fiber) should be dry at all times. A constantly filled water dish is sufficient. Categorically avoid misting the terrarium and excessively soaking the substrate.

Feeding – Insatiable Appetite

The GBB is famous for its excellent appetite. The diet should be varied and consist of feeder insects (crickets, Turkestan cockroaches, dubia, locusts) appropriate to the spider's size.

  • Slings: feed every 3-5 days.
  • Adults: feed every 7-14 days.

Temperament and Venom

  • Character: This is a skittish spider, very fast and with a lively temperament, but not aggressive. When startled, it will bolt to escape, which is why it is not recommended for handling.
  • Urticating Hairs: In a threatening situation, it willingly flicks urticating hairs from its abdomen.
  • Venom: The venom strength is weak, comparable to a bee sting. A bite is not dangerous to a healthy person.

Breeding – A Challenge for the Advanced

The breeding process for Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens can be demanding. Mating can last for many hours, and females can be aggressive towards their partners. Even with a successful mating, the female does not always produce an egg sac, and if she does – the offspring can be difficult to incubate, making a successful breeding of this species a source of pride for the keeper.
