Description

Linepithema humile, also known as Argentine ants, are among the most invasive species in the world, as evidenced by their presence on the list of the 100 most invasive species globally. Originating from the tropical regions of South America, primarily Brazil and Argentina, they have spread widely due to human activities such as transport and trade. These highly adaptable insects, with their excellent adaptive abilities, have conquered almost every corner of the planet with a suitable climate.

Argentine ants are unique in many ways, particularly regarding their adaptability and ability to form vast colonies that can contain a tremendous number of queens and workers. The most impressive and well-known colony extends over 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles) in southern Europe, encompassing countries such as Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy.

Their remarkable efficiency in finding and securing food sources, coupled with their high level of determination and aggression compared to other invasive ant species, gives them a significant advantage over native species in the environments they invade.

Their ability to quickly recruit workers for cooperative action is crucial in their competition with other species, such as Tapinoma magnum, with which they engage in fierce "ant wars."

These ants are also exceptionally versatile regarding their living environments, thriving in both urban and wild settings. In cities, they often nest near human dwellings, taking advantage of trash, while in more natural conditions, they nest under stones or tree trunks that provide warmth for queens and offspring.

Their diet is equally versatile; Argentine ants readily consume various foods, from sweet liquids like honey or sugar water to various available insects. During hunting, they employ a technique known as "eagle spreading," attacking the limbs of their prey to quickly immobilize and neutralize their future meal.

Ultimately, with their unparalleled adaptive abilities and efficiency, Linepithema humile is an excellent example of how species can effectively adapt and dominate various ecosystems worldwide.
