Description
Lasiodora parahybana – The Gentle Giant of Brazil
Introducing Lasiodora parahybana, also known as the Brazilian Salmon Pink Birdeater – one of the largest, and at the same time, most desired tarantulas in the world. This majestic spider, originating from the humid forests of Brazil, is a true pearl in the crown of any collection. Despite its impressive size (up to 25 cm leg span!), it is a species with a surprisingly docile disposition, making it an excellent choice for individuals beginning their adventure with tarantula keeping.
Its powerful build, velvety black body, and characteristic salmon-pink hairs create an unforgettable sight. If you dream of owning a true colossus that is both hardy and relatively simple to care for, Lasiodora parahybana is the species made for you.
Why is Lasiodora parahybana an Exceptional Choice?
- A True Giant: It is one of the largest tarantulas available in the hobby, ranking just behind the legendary Goliaths (genus Theraphosa). Its presence in a terrarium inspires awe and respect.
- Very Fast Growth: Watching a small spiderling transform into a mighty giant in just 2-3 years provides enormous satisfaction. This species grows very quickly.
- Calm Character: Despite its menacing appearance and impressive size, this is a tarantula with a docile and predictable disposition. It rarely assumes a defensive posture, preferring flight or flicking urticating hairs.
- Great Display Species: Unlike many reclusive species, L. parahybana often spends time in the open, proudly displaying its charms. It is an ideal inhabitant for a beautifully arranged terrarium.
- Exceptional Hardiness: This is a very resilient species that forgives minor mistakes by beginner keepers. It adapts perfectly to conditions and tolerates fluctuations in temperature and humidity well.
Temperament and Safety – What You Need to Know
The key to understanding this species is distinguishing between a lack of aggression and a readiness to defend. This spider does not seek confrontation, but if provoked, it will not hesitate to use its defense mechanisms.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. The effects of a potential bite, which occurs extremely rarely, are comparable to a bee sting. A much greater danger is the mechanical tissue damage from its powerful fangs (up to 2.5 cm!).
- Urticating Hairs: This is the main and very readily used defense mechanism. This species does not hesitate to flick a cloud of very highly irritating hairs (Type I and III) from its abdomen. They can cause intense itching, rash, and blisters. Contact with skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract must be strictly avoided. Wearing gloves is recommended during all work in the terrarium.
- Defense Hierarchy: The spider usually chooses flight or flicking hairs. A threat posture and biting are the absolute last resort.
- Handling: Due to its very irritating hairs and potentially painful (though not dangerous) bite, handling this species is categorically discouraged.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – A Horizontal Fortress for a Giant
For a terrestrial species, the key rule is: the terrarium should be significantly wider than it is tall. For an adult specimen, the ideal dimensions are 40x30x30 cm or larger. Good, sturdy ventilation is essential (it can chew through aluminum mesh!).
The most important element is the substrate depth. A layer of coconut fiber or peat at least 10-15 cm deep should be provided. This allows the spider to dig, which reduces stress, and also drastically shortens the potential fall distance.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Atlantic Forest
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C. It does well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: Should be 65-80%. The best method is to keep the substrate moist (especially in the lower layers) and provide constant access to a water dish. This allows for the creation of a humidity gradient.
