Description
Vitalius chromatus (formerly Nhandu chromatus) – An Icon of Terrarium Keeping
Vitalius chromatus (formerly commonly known as Nhandu chromatus) is a true star in the world of terrarium keeping. It combines impressive size, spectacular coloration, and high resilience, making it one of the most desired species. Its bold nature means it often displays its beauty, becoming a wonderful display spider.
It is an ideal choice for the keeper looking for a large, active, and beautifully colored tarantula that is also relatively simple to maintain. However, one must remember its defensive character and potent weapon – urticating hairs.
Why is Vitalius chromatus an Exceptional Choice?
- Unmatched Beauty: A striking contrast of velvety black body, bright white stripes on the legs, and fiery red hairs on the abdomen. Importantly, juveniles acquire adult colors very early on.
- Impressive Size: Grows to a considerable size (16-18 cm, and even over 20 cm leg span), making it a true giant in a collection.
- Fast Growth and Appetite: It grows quickly (full size in 2-3 years) and is known for its "explosive" feeding response, which makes feeding extremely spectacular.
- Active and Visible: Unlike many reclusive species, V. chromatus often spends time in the open, patrolling the terrarium or waiting by its hide.
- Exceptional Hardiness: This is a very hardy species that forgives minor husbandry errors. It adapts perfectly to conditions and tolerates fluctuations in temperature and humidity well.
Temperament and Safety – The Key to Understanding
The temperament of V. chromatus is complex: bold, yet skittish and defensive. It is not aggressive, but ready to defend itself.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. The effects of a potential bite, which occurs extremely rarely, are comparable to a bee sting. The main risk is mechanical damage from the large fangs.
- Urticating Hairs: This is the main and very readily used defense mechanism. This species does not hesitate to flick a cloud of very highly irritating hairs (Type I and III) from its abdomen. They can cause intense itching, rash, and blisters lasting for many days. Contact with skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract must be strictly avoided. Wearing gloves and long sleeves is recommended during all work in the terrarium.
- Defense Hierarchy: The spider usually chooses to flick hairs or flee. A threat posture and biting are the absolute last resort.
- Handling: Due to its very irritating hairs, speed, and defensive nature, handling this species is categorically discouraged.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – A Horizontal Fortress for a Giant
For a terrestrial species, the key rule is: the terrarium should be significantly wider than it is tall. For an adult specimen, the ideal dimensions are 40x30x30 cm or larger. Good, sturdy ventilation is essential (it can chew through mesh!).
The most important element is the substrate depth. A layer of coconut fiber or peat at least 10-15 cm deep should be provided. This allows the spider to dig, which reduces stress.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating a Transitional Environment
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C. It does well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: Should be 65-80%. The best method is to keep the substrate surface dry and provide constant access to a water dish. Periodically, generously overflowing the water dish will hydrate the deeper layers of the substrate, creating a humidity gradient.
