Description
Heterometrus spinifer - Asian Forest Scorpion with Powerful Claws
Heterometrus spinifer, commonly known as the Asian Forest Scorpion, is one of the most striking and majestic arachnids in the terrarium hobby. Native to the humid rainforests of Southeast Asia, it inhabits the shaded forest floor, sheltering beneath decaying logs, tree roots, and excavated subterranean burrows. Its deep, lustrous, blue-black cuticle and massive, granular claws give it a formidable appearance, though it is fundamentally a calm, secretive, and docile animal.
It is an exceptionally safe scorpion for beginners eager to explore exotic arachnid keeping. Thanks to its very mild venom and peaceful disposition, this species has long remained an enduring favorite among hobbyists worldwide.

General Information
Heterometrus spinifer is a heavy-bodied member of the Scorpionidae family. Adults achieve lengths of 12 to 16 cm, making them one of the larger scorpions maintained in the hobby. Evolution has endowed this species with robust, muscular pedipalps (claws), which serve as its primary tools for prey capture and defensive deterrents. Consequently, its sting and venom glands on the metasoma are relatively small, with venom reserved strictly for subduing struggling quarry.
A captivating biological trait shared by scorpions is cuticle fluorescence. Under ultraviolet (UV) illumination, the exoskeleton of Heterometrus spinifer glows with a vivid, cyan-green fluorescence, offering an extraordinary spectacle during nighttime viewing sessions.
Husbandry & Enclosure Requirements
Providing suitable conditions for this tropical forest scorpion is straightforward when its rainforest origin is respected:
- Enclosure: For young scorplings at the L1-L2 development stage, small ventilated plastic containers (250-500 ml) are ideal, ensuring they easily locate their prey. For an adult specimen, a terrarium measuring 30x30x30 cm or 30x20x20 cm is optimal.
- Substrate: A deep layer of substrate (8 to 12 cm) is essential to accommodate burrowing behavior. A blend of coco fiber, peat moss, and Sphagnum moss works best, maintaining high moisture levels without breaking down.
- Humidity & Ventilation: Relative humidity should stay between 75% and 85%. The substrate must remain consistently moist throughout, without becoming waterlogged. Adequate cross-ventilation is vital to prevent stagnant air and mold growth.
- Temperature: Maintain daytime temperatures between 24-28°C (75-82°F) using a low-wattage heat mat mounted on the side wall of the terrarium (never underneath, as scorpions burrow downwards to escape excessive heat). At night, standard room temperature of 20-22°C (68-71°F) is sufficient.
- Hides & Hydration: Provide pieces of natural cork bark or curved coconut shells to create secure retreats. For subadults and adults, a shallow water bowl with fresh water must always be accessible.
Diet & Feeding
Heterometrus spinifer is an opportunistic ambush predator. Feedings are best carried out at dusk or at night when the scorpion is active:
- Juveniles (L1-L2): Feed 1-2 times per week using hatchling red runner roaches, pinhead crickets, or flightless fruit flies. For very small juveniles, freshly killed or pre-cut feeder insects are readily accepted and eliminate any risk of injury.
- Subadults and Adults: Offer appropriately sized feeder insects such as adult crickets, Dubia roaches, and mealworms. An adult scorpion requires a hearty meal only once every 7 to 10 days.
- Tools: Always use long terrarium tweezers for safe feeding and habitat maintenance.
