Description
Euscorpius sp. – docile scorpions from Southern Europe
Euscorpius sp. are small scorpions, reaching 3–4 cm, originating from Southern Europe. They are characterized by a brown-black coloration and exceptionally weak venom, which poses no threat to humans – a sting can be compared to the bite of ants of the genus Myrmica or Manica. Euscorpius is known for its mild temperament and avoidance of confrontation, making them an excellent choice for beginner keepers.
Keeping conditions
- Small terrarium: a single individual can even be kept in a 250 ml plastic container.
- Group housing: in a 20×20×20 cm tank, a pair or a small group can be observed (cannibalism is relatively rare).
- Humidity: moderately moist substrate with numerous hiding places (cork, stones, coconut shells).
- Room temperature: usually sufficient, although too low and extremely high temperatures should be avoided.
Feeding
Although they can be picky eaters and may go on hunger strikes for extended periods, they accept insects appropriate to their size: fruit flies or cockroach hatchlings for the youngest individuals, and crickets or larger cockroaches for adults.
Why choose Euscorpius sp.?
- Safe for beginners due to weak venom.
- Mild disposition.
- European, native species – interesting to keep in small groups.
