Heterometrus silenus belongs to the family Scorpionidae and was historically traded under the names of closely related species, such as Heterometrus petersii. It reaches substantial proportions, growing up to 12-15 cm (4.7-5.9 in) with its tail extended. The hallmark feature of this formidable predator is its broad, granulated claws (chelae), which it uses to overpower prey, excavate moist soil, and deter potential threats.
These scorpions are predominantly nocturnal, spending daylight hours resting inside subterranean tunnels or beneath cork bark flats. An extraordinary characteristic of Heterometrus silenus is its biofluorescence - under UV light, the entire exoskeleton radiates a vivid turquoise glow, allowing fascinating and safe nocturnal observation without disturbing the animal's natural routine.
