Description
Chilobrachys natanicharum (Electric Blue) – Jewel of the Thai Mangroves
In the dense mangrove forests of Thailand lives a creature of almost mythical beauty. Introducing Chilobrachys natanicharum – a tarantula whose coloration has been described as a "blue-violet sheen reminiscent of the color of electric sparks." Known for years in hobbyist circles as a legend under the name Chilobrachys sp. 'Electric Blue', it was only officially described by science in September 2023. Its mesmerizing appearance, unique biology, and demanding nature make it a true gem, intended exclusively for the most conscious and experienced collectors.
Why is Chilobrachys natanicharum an Exceptional Species?
- Hypnotic Appearance: It possesses an unusual, metallic blue-violet coloration on its legs and carapace. This is a so-called "structural color," resulting from the refraction of light on nanophotonic structures, not from pigment.
- A Species with a History: This is a recently described legend of terrarium keeping. Its name was determined in a charity auction, with the proceeds supporting the education of children and the treatment of cancer patients in Thailand.
- Master Weaver: This is an extremely "prolific" web-building spider. In a short time, it can transform the terrarium into a complex, dense network of silk tunnels and chambers.
- Old World Temperament: As an Asian tarantula, it is very fast, highly defensive, and possesses a potent, potentially medically significant venom. It does not have urticating hairs.
- Exclusively for the Advanced: Due to the combination of speed, temperament, and venom strength, this is a species intended exclusively for experienced and responsible keepers.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Providing the right conditions for this species requires understanding its unique ecology – its ability to live both underground and in tree hollows in mangrove forests.
Terrarium – A Hybrid Model for the Specialist
The optimal environment is neither a typical arboreal nor fossorial terrarium, but a thoughtful combination of both.
- Substrate: It is crucial to provide a very deep layer of substrate (coconut fiber, peat), occupying 1/2 to 3/4 of the enclosure's height (minimum 15-20 cm). This will allow the spider to dig an extensive tunnel system.
- Vertical Elements: It is equally important to place solid, vertical decor elements in the terrarium, such as cork bark flats or tubes, leaned against the wall and reaching from the substrate to the ceiling.
- Size: For an adult specimen, an enclosure of at least 30x30x30 cm is recommended.
Temperature and Humidity
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24–28°C. It also does well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: The recommended level is 70–80%. It is best maintained by watering one corner of the terrarium, allowing the water to soak into the deeper layers of the substrate while leaving the surface relatively dry.
- Ventilation: With high humidity, good ventilation is absolutely key to prevent mold growth.
Feeding and Safety
This is a voracious species with an extremely strong feeding response. Juveniles are fed 2-3 times a week, adults every 2-3 weeks. Due to its temperament and venom strength, handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers.
