Description
Chilobrachys sp. 'Blue Vietnam' – The Hypnotic Jewel of Asia
In the heart of Vietnam's dense forests lies one of the most coveted jewels in the world of tarantula keeping. Chilobrachys sp. 'Blue Vietnam' is not just an ordinary spider; it is a living work of art, a manifestation of primal beauty and untamed natural force. Its coloration is a deep, metallic sheen that only reveals itself in the right light, like a treasure unearthed from the darkness. It is the quintessence of what fascinates advanced enthusiasts most about Old World tarantulas: uncompromising character, impressive speed, and hypnotic aesthetics.
Why is Chilobrachys sp. 'Blue Vietnam' a Connoisseur's Choice?
- Subtle, Metallic Sheen: The true magic of this species lies in its hidden shimmer. The base color is a deep brown, but under the right lighting, the spider gleams with a deep, metallic blue sheen. The effect is most spectacular just after a molt, when the entire body can take on an intense, blue-black color.
- Master Weaver: This is one of the best "display species" among fossorial tarantulas. It creates extensive, three-dimensional web structures around the entrance to its burrow, incorporating substrate and leaves. This turns the terrarium into a dynamic, ever-evolving landscape.
- Old World Temperament: Its character is the essence of Asian tarantulas. It is highly defensive, nervous, and lightning-fast. It does not possess urticating hairs, and its only line of defense is flight or, as a last resort, confrontation.
- Enigmatic Identity: This is an undescribed scientific species (sp.), not, as is commonly believed, Chilobrachys dyscolus. It is a completely different taxon, which makes it even more unique and desirable in collections. It should also not be confused with Chilobrachys natanicharum ('Electric Blue').
- Exclusively for the Advanced: Owning this species is a testament to the highest level of experience. Its potent, potentially medically significant venom requires absolute respect and responsibility.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
The key to success in keeping this species is providing it with the opportunity to fulfill its most important instinct: digging.
Terrarium – A Vertical Underworld
The terrarium must be vertically oriented to accommodate a very deep layer of substrate. For an adult specimen, an enclosure of at least 30x30x35 cm (height) is recommended. The most important element is the substrate depth – an absolute minimum of 20-25 cm. This allows the spider to dig a burrow, which is fundamental to its sense of security.
Temperature and Humidity – The Gradient Technique
- Temperature: The optimal range is 21–28°C. It does well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: Instead of maintaining uniform humidity, it is recommended to create a gradient. The deep layers of the substrate should be kept constantly slightly moist, while the top layer can periodically dry out. This is easiest to achieve by slowly pouring water into one corner of the terrarium.
- Ventilation: The terrarium must have efficient gravity ventilation to prevent mold growth.
Feeding and Safety
This is a voracious species with a strong hunting instinct. Juveniles are fed every 3-5 days, adults every 1-2 weeks. Due to its temperament and venom strength, handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers.
