Description
"White Hair" Metallic Pinktoe Tarantula (Avicularia avicularia Morphotype)
Introducing a living gem of the Amazon canopy – a tarantula whose deep, metallic blue-black body appears to be covered in frost. This is no ordinary tarantula; it is a rare and coveted specimen that embodies beauty, impressive size, and, unusually, an exceptionally docile disposition in the world of terrarium keeping. It is an absolutely top representative of the genus, ideal for the keeper who values rarity, beauty, and a calm character.
Why is the "White Hair" Metallic Pinktoe an Exceptional Choice?
- Unparalleled Beauty: The defining feature is the dense covering of the body and legs with long hairs tipped in white, creating a spectacular, "frosted" appearance against the metallic blue-black body.
- Impressive Size: This is a true "Giant Pinktoe Tarantula." Adult females can reach an impressive leg span of 18-20 cm, making it one of the largest representatives of the genus.
- Legendary Calmness: It is consistently described as one of the most docile and calmest tarantulas available. Its predictable disposition makes it an ideal choice even for beginner keepers.
- "Delicate Species" Myth Debunked: For years, this species was considered prone to sudden death ("padliwy" in Polish). Today we know that the problems stemmed from incorrect husbandry practices. By providing the key element – excellent ventilation – this is a hardy and trouble-free spider.
The True Identity: Clarifying the Name
The key to understanding this spider lies in nomenclatural clarity. The scientific name Avicularia metallica is currently considered dubious (nomen dubium). Scientific research from 2017 showed that spiders sold under this name are actually Avicularia avicularia Morphotype 6 (M6). The "White Hair" descriptor refers to a particularly spectacular and sought-after line within this morphotype, valued for its intensified hairiness, above-average size, and pure bloodline from Brazil.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete, Modern Guide
The key to success in keeping this species is moving away from outdated methods and understanding its natural environment – the windy tree canopies, not the rainforest floor.
Terrarium – Vertical Terrarium
As an arboreal species, it absolutely requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the recommended minimum dimensions are 30x30x45 cm. Choosing a front-opening or side-opening terrarium is crucial to avoid destroying the spider's web nest during every maintenance task.
Ventilation – Absolute Priority and Solving the "SADS" Riddle
The historical problem of "Sudden Avicularia Death Syndrome" (SADS) was not a mysterious disease, but the result of stagnant, humid, stuffy air. Therefore, excellent ventilation is the absolute most important condition for success in keeping. The best solution is cross-ventilation (vents on opposite walls), which ensures constant air circulation, mimicking natural, windy conditions.
Temperature and Humidity – A Modern Approach
- Temperature: The optimal range is 21-29°C. The species does perfectly well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: Should be 60-80%. However, the way it is maintained is most important. Instead of keeping constantly wet, swampy substrate, provide a large, open water dish and lightly mist one wall of the terrarium every few days. The substrate should be allowed to dry out.
Temperament and Safety
This is a species with a docile disposition, but very skittish and fast. It possesses Type II urticating hairs, which are not flicked into the air but transferred only through direct contact. Its unique defense mechanism is the ability to accurately shoot a stream of feces. Due to its tendency to jump, handling this species is strongly discouraged to avoid a potentially fatal fall for the spider.
