Species Description:
Xenesthis immanis is an impressive tarantula species originating from the tropical regions of Colombia. It features a dark, velvety coloration with a characteristic metallic sheen on the carapace and long, densely haired legs. It is often described as one of the most beautiful representatives of its genus. This species is particularly attractive to more experienced keepers due to its size and unique appearance.
Keeping Conditions:
- Terrarium:
- Minimum dimensions are 30x30x25 cm for an adult specimen.
- Substrate:
- Peat, coconut fiber, or a mixture of these with added moss is recommended. The substrate layer should be 7–10 cm to allow the spider to potentially dig.
- Temperature:
- The optimal temperature range is 24–28°C.
- Humidity:
- Should be maintained at 75–85%. It is important to regularly mist one part of the terrarium so the spider has access to a moister zone.
- Ventilation:
- Good ventilation is necessary to prevent mold, while also taking care not to over-dry the spider's environment.
- Terrarium Additions:
- It is advisable to provide hides made of pieces of bark or root. Artificial or spider-safe live plants can also be placed. A flat container with fresh water is also essential.
Feeding:
The diet of Xenesthis immanis should be varied and adapted to the age and size of the spider:
- Juveniles: Fruit flies (for very small ones), cockroach nymphs, small crickets.
- Adults: Larger cockroaches (e.g., Turkestan, dubia, Madagascar), crickets, mealworms (as a supplement), locusts.
Remember to adjust the size of the food to the size of the spider and remove uneaten remains to prevent the development of mold and mites.
