Description
Tapinauchenius rasti – St. Lucia Tarantula
An exotic, fast, and beautiful arboreal tarantula originating from the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. Tapinauchenius rasti is distinguished by its incredible coloration – shades of brown, copper, and violet shimmer in the light, giving it an extremely striking appearance.
Characteristics:
- Species Name: Tapinauchenius rasti
- Keeping Difficulty: Medium / For Advanced
- Lifestyle: Arboreal
- Temperament: Very fast, skittish – not recommended for frequent handling
- Adult Size: Approximately 10–12 cm (leg span)
Keeping Conditions:
- Humidity: 70–80% (regular misting of one part of the terrarium or a water dish/moist sphagnum moss is recommended)
- Temperature: 24–28°C
- Terrarium: Vertical, height-oriented (e.g., 20x20x30cm or larger for an adult). Numerous climbing elements such as vertical cork tubes, branches, lianas, and vegetation (live or artificial) enabling nest building are essential. Good gravity ventilation is important to prevent mold while maintaining high humidity.
Keeping Notes:
Tapinauchenius rasti does not dig burrows in the substrate. Instead, it eagerly builds characteristic web nests and hideouts in the upper parts of the enclosure, often inside cork tubes or among dense leaves.
This is an ideal choice for enthusiasts of rare, beautifully colored, and active arboreal tarantula species. Due to its considerable speed and skittishness, keeping this species is recommended rather for individuals who already have some experience in caring for fast tarantulas.
