Description

Pterinochilus murinus "Usambara"

In the world of tarantula keeping, few species evoke such extreme emotions as Pterinochilus murinus. Known by many evocative names – "OBT" (Orange Baboon Tarantula) or "Orange Bitey Thing" – it is the crown jewel of arachnoculture. It is a spider of unparalleled beauty and fascinating behavior, which demands an equally high level of competence, preparation, and, above all, deep respect from its keeper.

The "Usambara" color form presented here, originating from the mountains of the same name in Tanzania, is famed for its most intense, bright orange coloration.

Species Profile: Beauty and the Beast in One

  • Dazzling Coloration: An intense orange color and a distinct, starburst pattern on the carapace make it one of the most beautiful tarantulas in the world.
  • Prolific Web Builder: This is a "mad" web-building spider. In a short time, it can turn the entire terrarium into a dense, complex network of web tunnels, which is fascinating to observe.
  • Defensive Temperament: It belongs to the African "baboon spiders," famed for their defensive nature. It is extremely fast and, when provoked, will unhesitatingly assume a threat posture and attack.
  • Potent Venom: As an Old World tarantula, it does not possess urticating hairs. Its only form of defense is its bite. The venom is potent and considered medically significant, causing severe pain and muscle cramps.
  • Species for the Advanced: Due to the combination of speed, defensive character, and potent venom, this is a species intended exclusively for experienced and responsible keepers.

Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide

Understanding the natural needs of this species is the key to safe and successful husbandry.

Terrarium and Substrate – Engineering Calm

For an adult specimen, an enclosure of at least 30x20x20 cm is sufficient. The most important element, however, is deep substrate. Providing a layer of coconut fiber or peat with a depth of at least 10-15 cm is a crucial tool for managing temperament. A spider that has the ability to dig a deep burrow feels secure and is much less prone to aggression. It is also wise to add decor elements, such as pieces of bark or roots, which will serve as anchor points for the webbing.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: The optimal range is 24-29°C (75-84°F). However, the species is very hardy and also does well at room temperature.
  • Humidity: Should be 50-70%. The best method is to keep the substrate mostly dry and provide constant access to a water dish. Occasionally overflowing the dish will moisten the immediate surroundings, creating a humidity gradient.

Feeding

This is a voracious species with a strong feeding response. Juveniles are fed every 3-5 days, adults every 7-14 days. The diet should consist of appropriately sized feeder insects (crickets, cockroaches).

Temperament and Safety – Rules for Handling the "Pterrors"

The defensive reactions of P. murinus are an instinctive strategy. Possessing no urticating hairs, its only defense is to attack. This must be absolutely respected.

  • Venom: Potent, medically significant. A bite is very painful and can cause muscle cramps lasting for many days.
  • Speed: Legendary, often described as "teleportation." The spider is capable of moving faster than the human eye can register.
  • Handling: Under no circumstances should this spider be handled. All manipulations in the terrarium must be carried out using long tweezers and with extreme caution.
