Description
Psalmopoeus reduncus – The Jewel of Costa Rica
Psalmopoeus reduncus is a jewel among New World arboreal tarantulas. It is a species with a fascinating duality: it combines elegance and beauty (especially in juveniles) with an "Old World" temperament. Its most characteristic feature is the bright orange bristles around the chelicerae, which contrast beautifully with the brown-golden body. This is an ideal choice for the keeper who is looking for more than just a typical beginner tarantul.
The key feature of the entire Psalmopoeus genus is the complete absence of urticating hairs. When threatened, this spider relies exclusively on its incredible speed and moderately potent venom. This makes it an ideal "bridge species" for those wishing to gain experience working with fast spiders, without the risk associated with the most potent venoms of Asian or African tarantulas.
Why is Psalmopoeus reduncus an Exceptional Choice?
- Fascinating Metamorphosis: Juveniles are spectacularly colored – they have black legs with orange accents and an iridescent, greenish abdomen. Adult females adopt elegant, chestnut-brown colors with the characteristic orange "lips."
- Very Fast Growth: This species grows lightning-fast, reaching maturity in as little as 2-3 years, which makes keeping it extremely satisfying.
- "Old World" Temperament: The lack of urticating hairs and reliance on speed and venom make it an ideal choice for the intermediate keeper ready for new challenges.
- Master Weaver: It is a productive "weaver" that creates intricate, tubular nests, often camouflaging them with pieces of substrate.
Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge
The character of P. reduncus is complex: it is not aggressive, but extremely skittish, nervous, defensive, and lightning-fast. It is a species intended for intermediate keepers.
- Venom: Considered moderately potent (medically significant). It is not life-threatening to a healthy person, but it is stronger than typical New World tarantulas. A bite is very painful and can cause symptoms such as intense pain, swelling, and muscle cramps.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast and jumpy spider. Its first reaction to a threat is flight. Only when cornered will it unhesitatingly assume a threat posture (it can also hiss – stridulate) and attack.
- No Urticating Hairs: This tarantula does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is its bite.
- Handling: Due to its extreme speed, jumpiness, and venom potency, handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter (12-inch) tweezers.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Vertical Terrarium
As an arboreal species, P. reduncus strictly requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the recommended minimum dimensions are 20x20x30 cm. Excellent cross-ventilation is crucial to prevent air stagnation and mold growth in the humid environment.
An essential decor element is a vertical cork bark tube and a thick layer of substrate (7-10 cm). Young specimens often dig burrows, and adults create nests at the base of the decor.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Rainforest
- Temperature: The optimal range is 22-28°C (72-82°F). It does well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: High, at 70-80%. It should be maintained by providing a water dish and regularly moistening the substrate.
