Description

Poecilotheria metallica – The Jewel of Terrarium Keeping

Poecilotheria metallica is a species that transcends the bounds of a mere hobby, becoming a living work of art and a true jewel in the world of keeping. Regarded as one of the most desirable arboreal species, it owes its elite status to its mesmerizing, metallic blue coloration, highlighted with yellow and white patterns. This visual masterpiece, combined with its impressive size, makes it the centerpiece of any advanced collection.

WARNING: Species exclusively for advanced keepers. P. metallica is an Old World tarantula – it is extremely fast, highly defensive, and possesses potent, medically significant venom. It requires the highest level of experience, respect, and absolute adherence to safety protocols.

Why is Poecilotheria metallica an Exceptional Choice for the Advanced Keeper?

  • Unmatched Beauty: Absolutely unique, metallic blue coloration with intricate, fractal patterns in yellow and white. Considered one of the most beautiful tarantulas in the world.
  • Impressive Size: Adult specimens reach a leg span of 15 to 20 cm (6-8 inches), making it a magnificent "display" arboreal species.
  • Fast Growth: Under optimal conditions, it can reach maturity in as little as 18 months, allowing one to quickly enjoy its full coloration.
  • Critically Endangered (IUCN): Its natural range in India is less than 100 km². Captive breeding plays a crucial role in the conservation of this species. Owning a specimen from a legal breeding program is an active contribution to conservation.

Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge

The key to safe keeping is understanding its defensive nature. This is a species intended exclusively for advanced keepers.

  • Venom: Potent and medically significant. A bite is very painful and can cause severe, long-lasting systemic symptoms, including severe muscle cramps and headaches. It demands absolute respect and caution.
  • Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast ("lightning-fast") spider. Its primary strategy is to flee to its hideout, but when cornered, it will unhesitatingly assume a threat posture and attack.
  • No Urticating Hairs: As an Old World tarantula, it does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is a powerful bite.
  • Handling: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter (12-inch) tweezers, in a secure environment, with utmost caution.

Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide

Vertical Terrarium

As an arboreal species, P. metallica strictly requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the recommended minimum dimensions are 20x20x40 cm (ideally 30x30x40 cm). Excellent cross-ventilation is crucial to prevent air stagnation and mold growth in the humid environment.

An essential decor element is a vertical cork bark tube, which will mimic a natural tree hollow and serve as the main hide.

Temperature and Humidity – Simulating a Monsoon Forest

  • Temperature: The optimal range is 25-28°C (77-82°F), with acceptable nighttime drops.
  • Humidity: High, at 70-80%. It is best maintained by providing a water dish and periodically misting the terrarium walls, allowing for a slight dry-out period between mistings.

Legal Status (CITES)

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Convention. When purchasing one, you must receive a document from the seller confirming its legal origin (e.g., certificate of captive breeding). In Poland, there is no requirement to register spiders with the county office, however, possessing the aforementioned document is legally required.
