Description

Phormingochilus arboricola – The Crown Jewel of Borneo

In the heart of the humid, tropical rainforests of Borneo hides one of the most phenomenal arboreal tarantulas in Asia – Phormingochilus arboricola. This majestic tarantula is the embodiment of elegance and primal force, making it a true jewel and an object of desire for the most discerning and experienced collectors. Its hypnotic, velvety black coloration, which shimmers with subtle shades of purple and blue in the right light, combined with its impressive size (up to 18 cm), creates an image of a creature with an extraordinary, dark aesthetic.

This is a species for the connoisseur – a keeper who is not looking for a docile pet, but desires to observe the unrestrained, primal behaviors of a predator under the safe conditions of a terrarium.

WARNING: Species exclusively for advanced keepers. P. arboricola is an Old World tarantula – it is extremely fast, highly defensive, and possesses potent, medically significant venom. It requires the highest level of experience, respect, and responsibility.

Why is Phormingochilus arboricola an Exceptional Choice for the Advanced Keeper?

  • Dark Elegance: Deep, velvety black with metallic reflections of purple and blue. The adult male transforms into a beautiful, light brown color.
  • Impressive Size: One of the larger arboreal tarantulas, reaching a leg span of up to 18 cm.
  • Fascinating Lifestyle (The Arboreal Digger Paradox): Although adults are typically arboreal and build beautiful web nests, juveniles show strong fossorial (burrowing) tendencies. Observing this behavioral change is extremely rewarding.
  • Old World Temperament: Its speed and defensive posture provide a satisfying challenge for the most experienced keeper, serving as a testament to their skill.
  • Systematic Novelty: The species was formally described only in 2015/2019 (previously as Phormingochilus carpenteri/kirki), making it an interesting acquisition for taxonomy enthusiasts.

Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge

The key to safe keeping is understanding its defensive nature. This is a species intended exclusively for advanced keepers.

  • Venom: Potent and medically significant. A bite is very painful and can cause severe, long-lasting systemic symptoms, including strong muscle cramps. It requires absolute respect and caution.
  • Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast ("lightning-fast") spider. Its primary strategy is to flee to its hideout, but when cornered, it will unhesitatingly assume a threat posture and attack. It can produce hissing sounds (stridulation).
  • No Urticating Hairs: As an Old World tarantula, it does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is a powerful bite.
  • Handling: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers, in a secure environment, with utmost caution.

Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide

Semi-Arboreal Sanctuary

The key is to understand its hybrid lifestyle. The terrarium must be vertically oriented (min. 20x20x40 cm, and ideally 30x30x45 cm for an adult) and possess excellent cross-ventilation.

A very thick layer of substrate (minimum 10-15 cm) that holds moisture (coconut fiber, peat) is essential. This allows young individuals to dig and stabilizes conditions for adults. A large, vertical decor element (cork tube) is equally important, as it will serve as the main hideout.

Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Rainforest

  • Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C.
  • Humidity: High, at 75-85%. It must be maintained by keeping the substrate moist and providing a water dish, while also ensuring excellent ventilation to prevent stagnation and mold.
