Description
Orphnaecus philippinus – The Velvety Jewel of the Philippines
Orphnaecus philippinus is a true jewel among Asian tarantulas, prized by connoisseurs for its unique, intense orange coloration. Its slender build and short, dense hair give it a velvety texture. It is an obligate fossorial species, spending most of its time in a self-dug burrow, which makes every sighting of it precious and eagerly awaited by the keeper.
WARNING: Species exclusively for advanced keepers. O. philippinus is an Old World tarantula – it is extremely fast, highly defensive, and possesses potent, medically significant venom. It requires the highest level of experience, respect, and responsibility.
Why is Orphnaecus philippinus a Connoisseur's Choice?
- Hypnotic Coloration: A uniform, intense coloration ranging from bright, tangerine orange to a burnt shade. Its velvety texture gives it a unique, delicate sheen.
- Master of Underground Engineering: This is an obligate fossorial species. Observing it create deep burrow systems and line them with dense webbing is the main attraction of keeping it.
- Old World Temperament: Its speed and defensive posture provide a satisfying challenge for the most experienced keeper.
- Fascinating Scientific Potential: Studies on its venom show potential in medicine, including analgesic and neuroprotective properties.
- Exclusively for the Advanced: Owning this species is a testament to the highest level of experience and responsibility in terrarium keeping.
Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge
The key to safe keeping is understanding its defensive nature. This is a species intended exclusively for advanced keepers.
- Venom: Potent and medically significant. A bite is very painful and can cause severe systemic symptoms. It requires absolute respect and caution.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast spider. Its primary strategy is to flee into its burrow, but when cornered, it will unhesitatingly assume a threat posture and attack.
- No Urticating Hairs: As an Old World tarantula, it does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is a powerful bite.
- Handling: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers, in a secure environment, with utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – An Underground Kingdom
The key is to provide it with the opportunity to fulfill its most important instinct: digging. The terrarium should offer ample vertical space (for substrate). For an adult specimen, an enclosure of 25x25x30 cm or 30x30x30 cm is recommended.
A very thick layer of substrate (minimum 15-20 cm for an adult) that holds moisture (coconut fiber, peat) is essential. This allows the spider to dig a burrow and provides a sense of security.
Temperature and Humidity – The Gradient Technique
- Temperature: The optimal range is 22-29°C. It does well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: High, at 70-80%. The best method is to maintain a humidity gradient – the deeper layers of the substrate should be kept constantly moist (achieved by watering one corner), while the surface can dry out slightly. Good ventilation is essential.
- Hydration: A water dish is essential.
